چکیده

By means of the improved electrophoretic technique it has been possible to study the association products which are formed when mixed and dissociated hemocyanins from two different species are reassociated. Both the dissociation and the reassociation of the hemocyanins have been produced simply by altering the pH of the solutions. Scale method electrophoretic diagrams have been used throughout this investigation. This method has adequately demonstrated its advantages and has permitted exact calculations of the mobility, concentration, and homogeneity of components which were either present in too small an amount or were too nearly similar electrochemically to have been defined by other methods. Evidence has been presented which indicates that a number of mixed hemocyanins have been produced. These mixed hemocyanin molecules contain fractions of the dissociated hemocyanins from two different species.

Minireview: Recent progress in hemocyanin research.

This review summarizes recent highlights of our joint work on the structure, evolution, and function of a family of highly complex proteins, the hemocyanins. They are blue-pigmented oxygen carriers, occurring freely dissolved in the hemolymph of many arthropods and molluscs. They are copper type-3 proteins and bind one dioxygen molecule between two copper atoms in a side-on coordination. They p...

Functional differences in the multiple hemocyanins of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus L.

Hemocyanin in the hemolymph of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus L., is a high-molecular-weight copper protein which binds oxygen cooperatively and shows a higher oxygen affinity at pH 7 than at pH 9. Treatment with EDTA (ethylenediaminetetra-acetate) disaggregates the hemocyanin molecules and abolishes both the reverse Bohr effect and cooperative oxygen binding. Chloride ions interact wit...

Modification of mesoporous silica SBA-15 with different organic molecules to gain chemical sensors: a review

The recognition of the biologically and environmentally important ions is of great interest in the field of chemical sensors in recent years. The fluorescent sensors as a powerful optical analytical technique for the detection of low level of various analytes such as anions and metal cations have been progressively developed due to the simplicity, cost effective, and selectivity for monitoring ...

[Hemocyanins as immunostimulants].

Hemocyanins, the giant oxygen transporter glycoproteins of diverse mollusks, are xenogenic to the mammalian immune system and they display a remarkable immuno-genicity. Therefore they are ideal non-specific immunostimulants to treat some types of cancer. They are used as an alternative therapy for superficial urinary bladder cancer (SBC), that has been traditionally treated with Bacillus Calmet...

Molluskan Hemocyanins Activate the Classical Pathway of the Human Complement System through Natural Antibodies

Molluskan hemocyanins are enormous oxygen-carrier glycoproteins that show remarkable immunostimulatory properties when inoculated in mammals, such as the generation of high levels of antibodies, a strong cellular reaction, and generation of non-specific antitumor immune responses in some types of cancer, particularly for superficial bladder cancer. These proteins have the ability to bias the im...
